It would have been a lie to say she'd slept restfully. Not in a strange house, not even with Charlie a few feet away in his side of the duplex. There were none of the sounds she associated with the Burrow. Birds sang in the distance but it was altogether too quiet. She tossed most of the night, finally waking around 6 a.m. to have breakfast with Hermione and Charlie, both of whom looked like they had slept like babies. Charlie left for the Ark just after breakfast and Hermione had stayed for another hour, catching Ginny up on things around "one" as the other settlement folks referred to their area.

Her own 'fridge' was empty but Hermione had showed her where her datapad listed a month's worth of credits - something that happens to everyone once the datapad "syncs" up on this side of the portal. She didn't have to report to the medical center until tomorrow but Ginny found herself restless once Hermione had taken off for the portal. It figured that Hermione would be in charge of it since it had been her discovery.

There was a wicker basket by the door and Ginny picked it up on her way out, settling it on her arm. She was dressed in jeans and an old Cannon's t-shirt, along with hiking boots that Charlie had insisted she would want to be wearing. Although it had been late when Kingsley showed her around, Ginny knew her way back to the center of the compound so she followed the dirt paths until she came out near the grouping of white tents and carts. Priority number one would be to find tea and something in the cheese family. She brushed her hair back from her face and stopped at the first cart, looking over its wares.

Adrian was surprised by how many familiar faces he'd seen the day before, between the Portal and then the drive to the settlement. He was shown to a small place that would be his, a duplex from the look of things (much larger than his flat had been in London, anyway), and he'd wondered throughout the night who his neighbor might be.

His first morning in the Settlement, he headed for the group of public structures for a late breakfast and some household goods.

One familiar face stuck out in the crowd, he was surprised to find - the youngest Weasley, who he used to fly against in school and who he'd seen in passing when working with the hospital on potions and healing herbs. Hmm... St. Mungo's. Another place he'd most likely never see again. Adrian wondered for a moment when those sorts of thoughts would fade, or if they ever would.

"Weasley," Adrian called out, not much above the crowd, as people milled about seemingly getting settled in the same way he was. Adrian was sure he looked a bit lost, being here completely alone, surrounded by families and everyone carrying picturesque baskets for their shopping (Adrian had simply emptied his backpack and brought that with him), and he worried he might stick out, so he made his way over to the petite witch and hoped she remembered him from work.

Adrian couldn't help but sigh in a little bit of relief when she recognized him. At the mention of her brother, he nodded, of course the Weasleys would all come...

"Just last evening," he said, coming out of his dark, brief thoughts. "I thought I'd pick up some brunch from the best joint in town," he joked, lamely, looking around in a moment of awkwardness. Looking back at her he asked, "You'll be working in healing here, I suppose?" Common ground. Something completely foreign here.

"I'm in luck then, you wouldn't mind a tag-along?" Adrian indicated the direction she had been heading in and figured seeing what there was for food would be easier with a partner. He'd been told they'd approximated the diets as much as possible, but honestly Adrian had no idea what that meant. She seemed to be doing well, what with the fruit and tea already in her basket.

He nodded at her explanation, "Who will you be training under, do you know yet?" He hadn't considered education in this society, having been on his own in potions since he left Hogwarts, unless you counted his father. Suddenly he missed his dad, too, and looked up and away from Ginny just in case his eyes may have watered shortly.

"I'm not totally sure yet; I'll keep tinkering with my own research of course, but I figure I'll be much more useful in herbology here than potions. It's surprising to me that they didn't make certain skills paramount in the lottery, like potions and healing..." he let his thought trail, wondering if the lottery really had been completely blind and democratic after all.

"Is that tofu over there?" Adrian asked suddenly - it didn't look totally like tofu but maybe some approximation of tofu and cheese curds?

Adrian gave her a small smile, feeling more friendly and social than usual thanks to the unusual circumstances. And she was right, it was a good feeling to see a familiar face.

"Oh I remember her, wicked on the pitch, and part of that trio... Angelina was one of them, they were so good together, not that I would have admitted it back at school of course, they were competition, but Wood trained them well." He mused allowed. "Hermione... Oh, Granger? She was Potter's right hand, yeah? Is she part of the Ministry and all that, now?" He remembered the bushy haired girl vaguely from school, but knew what the history books said about her at least.

Adrian looked over the fruit, "I couldn't take one of yours, I'll trust your word," he said, somewhat surprising himself as the words came out. He picked up a couple of the apple-pear things, and one of the sort-of-grape cabbages. He pulled out his datapad an noticed it beep lightly as it took a few of his first credits. Something about purchasing something, in this new fashion, in this new place and time, made it feel suddenly more real.

"You don't suppose they're going to figure out butterbeer here, do you?" He laughed as he pushed his fruits into his backpack and slung it back over his shoulder.

"Arithmancy? I know my way around a scale now and then, but you might as well be speaking runes to me when it comes to Arithmancy." Adrian said lightly.

The thought of getting to know all of these people who were peripheral in his life was slightly daunting, but Adrian had a hope that he'd be able to skate by in this world much as he had in his last; do his work, keep his head down, get out alive.

"Scotch?" Adrian's blue eyes lit up at the mention, "Oh Merlin, I think I'd give all my credits for two fingers worth." Then he looked where Ginny was indicating and nodded, "tea sounds good, too, though," he added sheepishly.

"I didn't have anything in mind in particular, didn't have much chance to explore last night, so I thought I'd wander a bit. What about you? Other than a craving for cheese?" He moved to lead the way toward the tea seller.

"Your big brother - Charlie's older, right? You're the youngest? - is already having you make him dinner?"

Before Adrian knew what was happening, he was saying, "To make up for it, how about someone makes you dinner sometime?"

Adrian was surprised by his admission of offering dinner sometime, but he was, indeed, an alright cook. "Well, he knows his way around apple-pears and grape cabbages. Does that count?" He asked, dodging a woman with a very full cart before coming back to Ginny.

Taking a moment, he clarified. "I think it's safe to sayyou're the only person I know here, and the other side of my duplex is even uninhabited as far as I've been able to tell, so yes, I'd enjoy having dinner with company sometime."

He'd ignored her almost mention of the Weasley that'd died in the war - the thought that crossed his mind at the almost-mention was of his own family. They'd all be dead soon, too, in their own time, he imagined.

Adrian swallowed thickly. He hadn't thought he'd have to discuss his family's decision. "Mum and Father... they were adventurous when it came to us, after the war and buying a place outside England and all that..." He tried, and then tried again, "but even when my lottery came up, they decided to stay." He took her aside, trying to find some semblance of privacy in the bustling tents, all the new people. "I practically begged them," he nearly whispered, and then shook his head.

Regaining his composure, he finished, "My sister Sera is due with her little girl in December, they all decided to take their chances. I couldn't persuade them." The story told, he looked up, "You're still looking for cheese and meat, aren't you?" His face slid back into its usual mask, cool and calm and unaffected.

Adrian sighed, feeling that'd he'd over stepped his own bounds and clearly hers by explaining. Waving off her concern - she couldn't actually care that much, right? She didn't even know him - he shook his head and said, "Don't be. I suppose with most people traveling with their families, I'll have to tell that story more than once now that I'm here. You simply... ripped the band-aid off, to use a Muggle phrase." He nodded encouragingly, hopefully letting her know that it really was ok. He'd process the knot in his stomach later, in the private of his home, no need for a near-stranger to worry about his problems.

Smiling at her suggestion - honestly relieved and genuinely excited - he said, "That sounds like a great idea. Maybe they'll have another bottle of Scotch, and perhaps a wine of some sort, made from cabbage, surely," he joked, and followed her lead through the crowds.

At Ginny's mention that he knew her, Adrian couldn't help but feel warmed, it was such a casual thing to think, and yet to hear her say it made him feel better somehow. "That I do, though I think we've exchanged more words today than in all the years we've been acquaintances," he smiled, and then laughed at her exchange with the vendor. As they walked away, he leaned down a bit and said in a lower voice, "The masses have only been here for 30 hours and you're worried about there already being a black market underground?" His eyes, he was sure, sparkled with amusement; Gryffindors really were as Slytherins had always assumed, it seemed.

"Oh, a pint would be nice, especially in this weather, can you believe we stepped from gray, cold Britain one minute into this soggy warmth the next?" He shook his and was grateful for the t-shirts he'd packed. "Though it does make me wonder if they'll set up any sort of social station or pub," he mused allowed as they made their way further North.

"I bet Madam Rosmerta would make a mean sort-of-banana-not-quite-cream-pie. But it's probably not the best idea for us to be nostalgic just yet, yeah?"

When they reached the tent selling alcohol, Adrian introduced himself and bought a bottle of Scotch and a jug of a dark beer-like drink, that smelled a bit like a coffee-stout. It wasn't butterbeer, but he figured this way he'd at least have something to offer Ginny if she actually did let him cook her dinner sometime.

Looking up and across the way, he quickly bought a jug of that cabbage-grape's juice as well and then rejoined Ginny at the Scotch tent.

Adrian's mood fell a little bit when she mentioned she'd be leaving but he smiled as she entered her information for him in the datapad. Smiling, he said, "It does, doesn't it? If you find any interesting samples at the Ark, you'll let me know, yeah?" He nodded toward her and added, "I think I'll actually head home and have myself a sip of this Scotch before heading out to check out the landscape." He looked around them and then back at Ginny, nodding in appreciation before heading his own way, hoping he'd see her soon, despite his near certainty that this meeting was a coincidence that wouldn't be repeated as things settled in their new home.
