Setting: Settlement One Med Center and the area around it.

Wiping her mouth, Alicia splashed some water on her face hoping to rid herself of the pesky motion sickness that had been making her life miserable the past week. The constant shifting of the ground beneath her feet, the rumbling tremors that made everything shift on the shelves and the lack of sleep had all combined to messing with her balance to the point where she considering the validity of tethering a broom and settling in on that staying airbound and stable while the earth quaked. Just like she had been busy at the Med Center, dealing with everything from panic attacks to animal bites, Viktor had been busy at The Ark, dealing with the agitated animals, a fact that had worried more than Alicia cared to admit, and had done nothing to ease the constant nausea.
The geologists had made predictions, but that was all they had been able to do, and there had been several cases and worst case scenarios presented for them to prepare for. Everything from the seismic activity ceasing completely over tsunamis to the entire landmass of Zelandia being swallowed by the sea. In the past week, they had gone over evacuation plans and had rearranged the stocked supplies, enabling them to pack up everything in minutes without losing the careful system that made everything easily accessible to the staff at a moment’s notice.
When she hadn’t been at work, and Viktor wasn’t home, she had taken part in the school’s emergency Apparition session for the students with the most stable magic, going as young as down to the early teens. The argument had been that it would free up hands if the need for Apparating away was needed. It was a risky task, but it was with some relief Alicia had learned that they were strongly advising the students to only Apparate to spots they were able to see, and only if it was the only way out. She had had to bow out; while she had never had problems Apparating, it had always made her feel queasy, so rather than provoke the nausea that was already there, she had taken on the role of on-site Healer that would see to any of the inevitable Splinching hastily taught Apparating was bound to cause.
And then the volcanoes had started erupting, eliminating at least two of the geologists’ predictions, which in turn allowed them to better focus their preparations. At little, at least. A very little, because they still didn’t know how the eruptions would occur or what damages they could anticipate. They still didn’t know how the different Settlements would be affected, though with Three being the Settlement located the closest to one of the volcanoes, the general consensus was that the inhabitants there should at least be prepared for a complete evacuation. But it hadn’t happened yet.
Closing the door behind her, Alicia stepped out from the small bathroom, and headed outside. The air outside smelled of ash and a bit like sulphur, but it wasn’t as stuffy as inside. Besides, out here she had the sense that she could at least see the volcanoes, which somehow added up to them not being able to take her completely by surprise. She found a spot just in front of the Med Center, and crossing her arms over her chest, she watched as she smoke billowed from the mountain, trying to ignore the constant rumbling of the ground, while she once again ran over the emergency procedures and the geologists’ advice: Don’t lose your head.

Date: 2013-09-09 03:28 pm (UTC)Sensing he was watching her, she didn’t return the look, simply nodded. “Yeah, I’m fine. It’s just been a hectic week without much sleep and a lot of stress, which adds up.” She turned to look at him. “And that constant shifting is messing with my head.” She frowned slightly when she got a better look at him. “Where’d you just come in from?”

Date: 2013-09-09 03:35 pm (UTC)"Trouble sleeping? You know you can always send me a note if you need anything," he figured working at the medical center, she'd be a bit stricter about such an offer than most people, but Adrian had never worried about being punished for his trade. Plus, he spoke with real concern in his voice, which usually threw off any would be attacks. A Slytherin pureblood with a soul? How surprising.
"How's your inner ear normally? You might be sensitive." He looked back over his shoulder toward the housing, "Just at my place, I've got a lab set up in the second room, and my neighbor's a security witch so she hasn't been home much. I've taken advantage to get a bunch of back up potions together for you guys." He indicated the bag, "burn salves, pepper-ups, mild sedatives for once the evacuations start... Really anything I could think of that I had the makings for. How have things been so far?"

Date: 2013-09-09 05:01 pm (UTC)“Normally, my inner ear is very sensitive,” she chuckled, sending Adrian a smile for having narrowed in on the one thing she had known since she was a child. “Always has been, except for when I’m on a broom and I’m the one deciding when to swoop and swerve.”
She looked to the bag he had brought, considering how to best describe how things had been at the Med Center. Well, she knew perfectly well how things were, how it felt like that evening in the Room of Requirements before they had made their presence at the school known. When they had arrived and she had started treating some of the injuries that the younger students had suffered and they didn’t know when, just that at some point soon, something terrible would happen. Even though Adrian had only been a year after her and hadn’t been at Hogwarts at that time, she didn’t say that; thinking of how Professor McGonagall had dismissed the entire Slytherin House, a decision that at the time had seemed plausible yet now still made her flinch. That one decision, that one House was by default declared unable to fight or even get the chance to speak against what was happening… But back then Slytherin had been an evil House in her mind, and now, as the old House rivalry had become the past and she had gotten to know Slytherins in general – Adrian in particular – she could see the unfairness in the Professor’s dismissal of them. “Are you familiar with the Muggle musical Les Misérables?” she asked him instead as it was the first somewhat comparable sense she could think of, maybe because she had thought of that same part when she had arrived at the castle those years ago. “At one point, the students has retreated to a café for the night, where they’re mourning their and drinking to the comrades they lost. Outside their barricade is all that’s protecting them from the soldiers that are bound to come. They don’t know when or how many, just that it will be horrible.” With a nod, she looked to the Med Center next to them. “The worst of them are being kept sedated while they’re Healing and right now it’s quiet, but it’s only a matter of time, isn’t it?” Then she gestured to his bag. “We can use all the remedies we can get our hands on,” she admitted, “but keep a good selection for yourself. Just in case.” Her own ‘go-bag’ with her extra change of clothes and a fair selection of Potions were currently shrunken and kept safely in her pocket.

Date: 2013-09-10 04:43 pm (UTC)"I've seen the play," he finally answered simply. He shook his head, though, "This isn't war, though. We can prepare properly and minimize the damage." He knew it wasn't much comfort, but it was what he'd been telling himself, so maybe it would help to say it out loud, too.
"I always do," he replied, "and if you find the time comes you need some extra supplies yourself, you know that you and Viktor can always call on me, right?" Adrian hadn't made many friends in his life - he'd had his Housemates at school, and his family. But since coming to the island, he'd found he enjoyed having friends, people to care about, people to hang out with, outside of his sister and Will. He certainly counted Alicia among that small group.

But I still appreciate it.” Alicia nodded towards the mountain. “Right now I’d settle for that one there to stop puffing like that,” then she looked back to Adrian.
