Alicia was one of Lavender's Gryffindor contemporaries, so when she had heard about the wedding Lavender had been pleased to find that she was able to attend. Even better, Dempster was able to go, too, which meant a romantic sort of day with the most handsome man she knew. She couldn't think of anything better.

Lavender had dressed for the occasion in a leaf green dress that hugged her curves and somehow made her grey eyes look luminous. She would have had to be oblivious not to notice the way that Dempster kept staring at her today, every glance giving her a quiet thrill. At his comment, she looked up with a sly smile. "Not today," she teased quietly. He meant every compliment, she knew. "Thank you."

"I'm a fool, and clearly a cat has had my tongue," he answered, his voice so low now that he rumbled in his chest pleasantly.

"Would you like to dance later? I can't guarantee that if anyone else asks you they'll leave the conversation with all of their fingers in tact," he joked, but truly the thought of someone else wrapping their arms around her made him feel very dark indeed. They hadn't spoken about their odd beginning in a long while - something he was fine with - but it still sometimes struck him that she'd been someone else's, and he didn't like the idea one bit.

They reached the front of the line and he ordered a stout for himself and looked to her, "What can I get you, lovely?"

His tone made her feel warm, the low rumble reminding her of times when they were alone and wrapped up intimately in each other. Lavender could scarcely believe that she was the only one who got to see him like that; she wasn't sure how she had managed to keep his attention all these months, just that she was glad she had. More than that, she had fallen for him in a way that she didn't quite want to admit to him yet, though it was hard to think of anything else when you were at a wedding.

"I would love to dance with you later," she said as they moved to the front of the queue. "I'll have wine, I think. Red."

"I'm pretty sure you could ask a bartender for gilded wine and you would get it," Dempster joked with a smile at their waiter before reaching for both drinks and handing Lavender hers.

"You were friends with Alicia in school?" He asked, only knowing the bride and groom through passing here in the village, though having met Alicia's mother a couple of times as well. "Did you plan to sit with your classmates?" He asked, feeling awkward. Demp considered himself lucky that he'd always lived as a bit of a loner, as he suspected people might find Lavender and he an odd couple, but he didn't have eyes for any of them and their potential opinions, so it didn't matter to him. When it came to making her comfortable about it, though, that he cared about. And his friendship with Lisa might be the only other example he had of spending time with people Lavender's age.

Lavender rolled her eyes. "I think you have too much faith in my abilities," she joked. "Besides, normal wine will suit me just fine."

She frowned slightly. "Sort of," she conceded. "We weren't close at all, but you know what common rooms are like at school. You get to know everyone a little bit. And I'm pretty sure she treated me at St Mungo's once." Lavender took a sip of her drink. "I don't mind where we sit," she said, careful to use the word 'we', aware once again that their shared circle of friends basically consisted of work colleagues. That was unsurprising, really, but maybe just a little on the limiting side. "I haven't made any plans. We can sit anywhere."

Dempster couldn't help his sigh of relief when she corrected him with her use of "we".

It had never really occurred to him that he'd be in a relationship that people might find odd, but even the wizarding world wasn't color blind, and his age and their status as co-workers certainly didn't help matters.

When it came time to do something that wasn't just the two of them, he worried more than he might normally. But now he just smiled, and looked around the crowd for spots. Pointing he asked, "How about over there?" It was a busy table but not packed, with a couple of Bulgarians - strangers to him, but he assumed from the way they talked in a language he didn't recognize - and a witch he vaguely recognized from Kingsley's office talking to another from the security's admin staff.

Lavender stood on tiptoes to peer at the table. "Perfect." It never hurt to mingle a bit and everyone at the wedding seemed to be friendly. With such a celebratory atmosphere, it would have been hard not to be in a good mood. Alicia and Viktor's nuptials had drawn quite an international crowd and it seemed as though the Bulgarians really knew how to throw a party.

"You know," she said as they made their way towards the table, "this is the first wedding I've been to since coming through the portal. Seems almost overdue, now that I think about it. Like there should have been more somehow."

Dempster nodded as they made their way through the crowd, "It does seem odd." He desperately wanted to tease her, ask her if she thought they should do something about that, but he worried how she'd take it.

Instead, they got to the table and set down his plate and drink before pulling out her chair.

Sitting down next to her and leaning in close, clearly excluding the others, he said, "I don't particularly want to share you," with a small giggle.

It was hard to resist kissing him when he leant in like that; Lavender pressed a light peck to his lips. "Good," she said quietly, almost smugly, "because I don't want to be shared. I only want you." The words brought a little colour to her cheeks, but she didn't look away. In fact, she shifted her chair a little closer.

"I'm going to hold you to that promise of a dance later," she added.

Dempster didn't let her go that easily and pulled her in for another kiss - an appropriate one, but certainly not a light peck. "A dance. Later, huh? How about now, and then later we can negotiate the terms of another 'dance'?" He quirked his eyebrows at her, his food and drink forgotten the moment her cheeks blushed like that.

He stood and lifted her with him, "Honestly I just can't wait to see the jealousy on everyone's faces, when they see you in my arms." He leaned down, whispering right into her ear, "Far more beautiful than the bride, though I know better than to say that out loud."

"Mm. Anyone would think youre trying to seduce me." Lavender lowered her voice to a whispeer. "I think we won't need to do much negotiation." A dance now and then some 'dancing' in private later would be perfect. Dempster knew the way to her good side.

Taking his hand, Lavender laughed softly. "You're terrible," she teased with a roll of her eyes. "Though I think a few people might be jealous of me."

Dempster laughed with her, enjoying how their voices sounded in chorus together. Had he really been so grumpy and gruff and quiet before he'd known her? He felt like there was noise in his life now, after so long buried in his books and his work.

Pulling her onto the dance floor gently he wrapped his large hands around her and pulled her close. "I think anyone would be right, Miss Brown," he added as an afterthought.

Spinning her out and then pulling her into his chest once again he asked with a grin, "So Alicia is the first of your friends to get married?"

"Good." Lavender smiled widely as Dempster pulled her against him, right where she belonged.

The smile never left her face as she spun out and then back into his embrace. "Now that you mention it, I think so. Other weddings I've been to have mostly been family and that sort of thing."
