James smiled at her invitation, "I should probably go home. You've always been..." He shook his head, "You've always been a compass for me, Lily, and it seems you're taking on that role here for me as well," he said, without explanation.
He leaned forward, kissed her lightly on the cheek, and said goodnight, "But we're neighbors, so I'll see you soon, right? Maybe we can get dinner with Sirius soon?" He hesitated before nodding and then making his way down her stone walk back to the street. He looked back one more time to wave and see if she was heading into the house alright, and then with a bent head, he headed home.
