Characters: Dempster Wiggleswade, OPEN, NPC Nicole (formerly of The Daily Prophet)
Setting: The Portal
Content: Gen
Status: Complete
Demp was on Security Detail at the Portal, he nodded with a small smile at the witch in charge and made his way around on other loop of the grounds. So far it had been a quiet night, but he preferred those anyway, no news was always good news if you asked him as an Auror. When the Minister had upped the Details a few weeks before, Demp had volunteered for extra shifts and offered to change up his schedule as others needed him to. The new year was hard enough having to get out at night and be away from family, but doubling up and dealing with the unknown? Dempster would rather it be him in that situation, with no one waiting at home and no family obligations, than anyone else.
Plus, quiet nights out here - the heat pushing down on him, the strange skies - were exactly his kind of night. Patrolling the grounds and catching up with his fellow Security workers, he could enjoy the silence for snatches of time, between Portal movement, at least. The smell of something tropical and almost like coconut but not quite wafted past him and he smiled, doubling back where he came from to make it back to the Portal in time for the potential next round of arrivals.
When a familiar face came through the portal a wide grin broke his normally serious attitude and he indicated with a shake of his head that she should wait until the group was through and sorted before stopping. Once the Portal personnel had made their announcements and the Muggle vehicles had departed bringing people to all three Settlements, Demp made his way to his old friend and gave her a hug. Shouting to his partner for this round that he'd be driving her home, he gave her a bright smile and asked how she was. Nicole had been his editor at the Daily Prophet, when he wrote legal advice columns for the newspaper, and he was so glad to see she had been chosen in the lottery, even if it had been after him. Her husband and young daughter would be coming in the morning, but she had come to set up the home to make the transition easier on the little girl.
Driving her home to her new house in Settlement 2, he made sure she knew how to send him notes on her datapad and then gave her another hug goodbye before jumping into the Ministry-owned open-air jeep and heading back to Settlement 1 and then the Portal. Yes, quiet nights were his favorite out here, but there was something about a noisy, funny conversation with a friend that beat all that out, surprising him in the most delightful way.
