"I'm sorry," Alicia apologized, realizing that she had once again put her foot in it. What was wrong with her? Where she used to be fairly skilled in communicating with other people she now turned into a blithering fool whenever she talked to Charlie. "I didn't mean to imply that you're the one who..." There was more she wanted to say, to make it clear to Charlie that she didn't fault him anything, but the sight that met her when she looked up to see what caused the shift in the air, rendered her completely speechless.

At first it was just a black dot against the blaring sun, but as the sound of wings grew larger in volume, the shape turned into a magnificent animal. Without thinking, Alicia took Charlie's hand again, the fingers of her free hand closing around his upper arm as she watched the dragon appear as it entered the shade. It was huge, and not just in size. The dark green scales were impressive in themselves, but the long, glittering, golden horns made it look downright regal. "Wow," she breathed, drawn to the creature, yet at the same time intimidated by its enormity and power and glad that Charlie was there for protection.

Her heart was pounding in her chest and she could feel the adrenaline pumping in her body, and yet she felt no desire to run. Instead she wanted to stay, wanted to keep looking at the dragon, and from somewhere far away Charlie's deep voice reached her. This was just a pup, or whatever not fully grown dragons were called? Alicia couldn't help but smile. "He's beautiful," she grinned, still torn between going to the dragon and hiding behind Charlie's massive frame.
